Since I am new to running, I started out using what I consider to be a cheap pair of running shoes. While they did work okay for a while, I soon began to lose enthusiasm for running once my hamstrings and quads started to ache incessantly.

To try and prevent injury, I started using a higher-end pair of running shoes. Unfortunately, the new pair didn’t help me run any faster. In fact, I started falling behind my running partners.

Here are the lessons I learned by making the switch, along with my recommendations for the best running shoes for heavy runners in 2022.

Can running shoes be too heavy?

Comfort is king when it comes to choosing running shoes. But, higher weight doesn’t always translate to more comfort.

As running shoes get older and older, they seem to get heavier and heavier. Obviously, you won’t want to be running in older shoes that are heavier than your newer ones. This can lead to a very uncomfortable running experience and is definitely the wrong way to run.

Weight doesn’t always equal comfort.

Remember, as a runner, you are asking a lot of your shoes, from shock absorption, support and stability to the ability to dry quickly. Each of these puts varying levels of stress on your shoes. If you have a heavier shoe, you’ll be putting more stress on your body.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that running while being overweight does put you at additional risk of injury and this is often exaggerated by people from the fitness industry. If you are overweight and not accustomed to running, your joints and muscles need to be gradually conditioned and you need to go slow in your progress. If you are a newcomer to running and you are carrying a significant amount of excess weight, you need to enlist the help/advice of a qualified coach or a doctor.
